Information about Theo
Having graduated Durham University in 2007 with a BA Hons in Music I began working as a professional performer. Since then I have been lucky enough to play my own music in some of the world`s more prestigious venues including The Royal Albert Hall, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington D.C.), Ronnie Scott`s Jazz Club, and the Southbank Centre.
I am currently a tutor for both vocals and piano for post-graduate students at London College of Music (at UWL) and have also enjoyed giving masterclasses at schools, universities, and music festivals such as Cheltenham Jazz Festival (The Art of Songwriting workshop), New Zealand School of Music (Improvisation Masterclass).
I have quite a wide range of musical experience and I utilise that facility to adapt to my pupils and to give them the best possible instruction based upon their individual hopes and ambitions.
Whilst I studied classical musical styles for my degree I do not teach classical piano or vocals now. I also refrain from teaching music specifically with the goal of passing exams such as ABRSM. The reason for this is simply that my teaching style relies upon being led by the enthusiasm for music held by both myself and my pupil and I find that exam preparations tend to stifle creativity and enjoyment for us both!
I am keen to discuss vocal technique, intonation (pitching), phrasing, breath control, diction, mic technique, improvisation, harmonic theory, song-writing, aesthetics, music career development, piano as a second instrument (i.e. piano as an accompaniment tool for singers), production techniques, audition preparation, recital preparation, and numerous other topics.
Lessons are held in my practise space at my home. The facilities include a professional standard digital piano, guitars, and recording facilities.
I am close to Loughborough Junction Overground, Denmark Hill Overground, and buses from Brixton (5mins) and Elephant and Castle (15 mins) stop outside my door.
Some reviews of my own performances:
`One of the most interesting jazz vocalists and composers to emerge on the British scene in recent years.` THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
`One of Britain`s finest jazz musicians and singers.` JAZZ FM
`Proving that he can live up to the hype.` METRO
`Listen out for his beguiling songwriting skills delivered via his strong earthy vocals and alluring charm.` TIME OUT LONDON
Availability: I have availability during weekday daytimes and some evenings. I don`t teach at the weekend.
Willing to travel: Home Only
