Information about Joanna

I am experienced in teaching KS2, 3, 4 and 5 and post-18 students and have prepared students for exams in English, Maths, History, Geography and Art. My specialism is English up to GCSE level. I am also very familiar with the requirements for SATs, for Entry Exams to schools in the Trafford area, and for GCSE English (different exam boards).

I have tutored students and adults in English for study purposes and for work requirements. I have also worked closely with students with special needs and understand how to break down skills and knowledge so that they can be learnt quickly and thoroughly. I work towards improving my students` engagement with subjects and their confidence in approaching the challenges of the education system - as well as enhancing their enjoyment of learning and language!

I keep a record of all skills taught each week, to enable me to continually assess the student, to identify where he/she needs to work next, and to check that we are meeting the needs of the curriculum as well. I also make this a celebratory part of my teaching: it`s great to achieve new skills!

I have excellent communication skills: teaching students as well as liaising with parents and carers. I am calm and patient, and also passionate about helping students unlock the mysteries of English and Maths!

Availability: Immediately, most days and evenings, Saturdays by arrangement. I am a driver and have a car.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have been a teacher in primary, secondary and further education for the past 25 years. I was the Head of English and Drama in my last two secondary schools. Over the last few years I have privately tutored adults and children in English and Maths.

I have successfully prepared primary students for the entry exams to Trafford schools as well as KS4 students for GCSE and Entry Level exams in English, Maths, History, Geography and Art.

In schools I have delivered training to staff on the effective teaching of different facets of the English curriculum and have set up and run a one to one programme in school to raise standards in English.

I have been a private tutor for five years now, and have built up a bank of resources and expertise. I keep up to date with changes to the curriculum - for instance the new GCSE exam specification and marking scheme for English, and also the new method of assessing students in secondary schools. My students have had very pleasing results in their exams, and all my students who have applied for Grammar Schools have been accepted.

I thoroughly enjoy working one to one with students and helping them to improve and enhance their understanding of English, Maths and other areas of the curriculum.

My daughter needed significant help in Maths. Joanna has been working with her for a couple of weeks now, she is making a clear progress and have become much more confident with her Maths skills, I`m very impressed. Joanna is experienced with children, she is friendly and patient, my daughter enjoys her classes.

Joanna has helped my son acquire a better understanding of literature and text. She has been quick to highlight his weaker areas and works hard to improve his inference and deduction skills. She has emphasised the importance of knowing the text giving suggestions on how to do that, and continues to provide clear guidance on the best ways to answer questions.
