Information about Miranda

I am a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher and researcher, currently in the final year of my PhD in Intensive Care Medicine at University College London. I have previously completed two Master degrees (in Molecular Nutrition and Management and Policy-Analysis) and have gained extensive experience in teaching, both during my Masters and PhD. This has contributed to my ability to communicate complex information to audiences at all stages of education. I enjoy sharing my passion for science with students and making them enthusiastic for a career in STEM.

As a result of my continuous commitment to academia at top tier institutes, I am recognised as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA). This is an international recognition of commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning in higher education and demonstrates that my practice is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). As part of my Master degree I followed an intensive 2-month course on didactic skills and teaching, focusing on biology at secondary school. In addition, I have obtained my TESOL certificate, a professional qualification for teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Creating a welcoming and safe environment for students during my teaching sessions has always been one of my top priorities. I believe that positive feedback and reassurance is key to creating self-esteem for students to excel in school and future careers. As a teacher I have realised that conventional methods do not always work for everyone. I therefore always try to tailor my teaching to individual needs and come up with alternative ways to explain theories, work through questions and transfer information. I try to challenge my students and guide their thinking, encouraging them to think critically and work independently.

Availability: I am very flexible with availability all week during the evening and all day during the weekend.
