Pupil engagement and progress must be at the heart of every outstanding lesson. I gave learners the opportunity to explore ideas for themselves, fostering a high degree of independence and ensuring that they are aware of my high expectations of their attainment and progress. In assessing students understanding of concepts I identified and remediated misconceptions. Work was scaffolded for those students who needed it but differentiated to allow pupils to follow a course through a topic suited to their individual needs and abilities. Links to other aspects of the Maths curriculum, other subjects and the real world were made explicit so that pupils had a sense of purpose as to what they were studying. The best lessons were when students were happily engaged in their study, arguing their reasoning to a solution and I, as the teacher, was almost superfluous.
In dealing with individuals many of these ideals would still apply. I have tutored a number of students, on a one to one basis, in addition to my classroom career. I found tutoring very rewarding as it offered me the opportunity to really get to know pupils, identifying their misconceptions and progressing their understanding at a more accelerated rate than is sometimes afforded in a class situation. I would welcome the chance to pass on my enthusiasm in order to help pupils who are not in the best of health.
I was judged as an outstanding teacher by Ofsted. Student voice indicated that pupils enjoyed my lessons because of the range of teaching strategies and resources I employed. A puzzle or problem, linked to the objectives of the lesson, engages pupils from the outset. In some lessons pupils were given card matching or sorting activities. In other lessons pupils played a game, practicing their knowledge. ICT was used when appropriate. I would hope to employ similar activities to engage students, allowing them to make progress at an appropriate rate. At school pupils appreciated the effort I made to provide activities, which engaged them and I had good relationships with my pupils. I hope that the same would be true when working with individuals.

Experience: I have taught Mathematics for over thirty years and have taught the full range of abilities form weak students up to A*. I have also worked, during a secondment, as a Mathematics Consultant with Staffordshire LEA. During the course of this time I have gained a wealth of experience, not only in the field of teaching Mathematics, as a second in department and temporary Head of Mathematics, but also in provision for Gifted and Talented pupils and in having responsibility for whole school issues. I also have some experience in teaching science.
