Information about Jacob

I studied History at the university of Sussex and I then won a scholarship to study for a MA in International Relations achieving a distinction in my dissertation. Prior to working in the classroom, I qualified as a Mountain Leader and I have since led twelve expeditions abroad as well a number of expeditions across the UK. I am also a qualified FA Level 2 football coach.

I am an experienced teacher with knowledge of different education programmes. My initial years in teaching began with the Teach First programme and I worked at a challenging secondary school in Lewisham. I was also involved in establishing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at this school as well as well as regular football matches, including acquiring a home pitch.

Over the last few years I have been working at United World College Maastricht: a school with a mission to unite cultures in order to create a more peaceful and sustainable future for the world. The school was founded by Kurt Hahn, an educationalist who believed in an educational model that promotes intercultural understanding, outdoor education and experiential learning. I taught History and Global politics at the school and I was also heavily involved in the school’s outdoor education programme as I coordinated the delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. I was a lead tutor in charge of mentoring two other tutors and I have built a life skills curriculum for grade 9.

Recently, I have been working as a freelance tutor, examiner and supply teacher and I am due to begin a teaching job in April at an independent school. I will be teaching History and Politics up to A Level.

I therefore have experience teaching English as well as Humanities subjects including History, Politics, Sociology and Geography. I also have knowledge and experience teaching GCSE, A Levels and the International Baccalaureate.

;;; St James Senior Boys School – History and Politics Teacher – April 2020 – Present – I currently teach History and Politics A level and GCSE at an independent boys school. I also coordinate the Duke of Edinburgh Award at the school.
;;; Southbank International School/The Golden Circle – Supply Teacher/tutor/outdoor instructor, September 2019 – April 2020 – I was a supply teacher at a central London international school teaching MYP and DP classes. I also worked as a freelance tutor in A Level Humanities and Social Science subjects and as a freelance expedition leader and outdoor education trainer.
;;; United World College Maastricht – History and Global Politics Teacher, August 2017 – August 2019. I taught MYP Individuals and Societies along with DP History and DP Global Politics at United World College in Maastricht. The school aims to use education as a force to unite cultures in order to create a peaceful and sustainable future for all.
;;; Teach First – Secondary School History and English Teacher, Prendergast Vale School, June 2014 – July 2016. I was accepted on to the 2014 Teach First Leadership Development Programme and I am now an ambassador having completed the programme. I was placed in a secondary school in Lewisham and I taught pupils from ages 11-16 at KS3 and KS4. During my time at this school, my department was the best performing in the school and we were in the top 11% of GCSE scores in the country. My pupils’ grades were particularly impressive and I achieved outstanding outcomes by significantly raising young people’s aspirations.
