Information about Ruby

I love using science and maths to understand how the world works and want to share this passion with others. Tutoring Maths and English at Kumon tuition while I was a teenager allowed me to develop my tutoring skills while working with children and teenagers of a wide range of abilities and ages. From this, I developed the belief that everyone’s mind works differently, so if someone doesn’t understand a concept or idea it isn’t a negative reflection on them, they just need it explained in different ways until one makes sense. Personally, I always find it much easier to learn when I know why the concept is useful. For example, how imaginary numbers are used in the design of electrical circuits. Therefore, I always try and find real world applications for what the student is learning to provide context on why it is important - something that my experience working in tech stands me in good stead for. I also maintain that truly understanding maths and science is about learning a mindset and a way of approaching problems, not just learning by rote or formulas for answering exam questions.

A year ago, I graduated with a first class Masters in Engineering from Oxford. My engineering degree was a general one, meaning I studied all engineering disciplines for the first two years (maths, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy systems). In the second two years of my degree I specialised into mainly Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering options so my work had some overlap with Chemistry and Biology. One of my favourite things about studying engineering was seeing how seemingly abstract mathematical concepts could be used to model the real world and aid engineering design. Throughout my degree, I was always very happy to explain concepts to my fellow students when they didn’t understand.

After graduating, I spent 9 months working in tech in Berlin which gave me great exposure to the technological possibilities out there, something I can bring into the classroom as real world examples.

This October, I am very excited to be starting a PhD at Imperial College London in AI for Health and am looking to find some tutoring I can fully commit to alongside my PhD work.
