Information about Timothy
I am a PhD student at the University of Cambridge looking for tutoring work while finishing my thesis. My research is in theoretical linguistics, but also involves mathematical and biological perspectives. My undergraduate degree (also at Cambridge) combined biology, chemistry and mathematical methods with linguistics, and so I have studied a range of disciplines at university level. I have additionally self-taught Japanese to an intermediate level.
I am friendly and approachable, and teach through direct discussion with students, building on my experience giving Cambridge supervisions. This allows students to develop their understanding of a subject while also directly addressing any areas where they might have difficulties. I am particularly interested in extracting the key concepts underlying topics and communicating them, leading to a deeper level of understanding which avoids the need for rote memorisation. This combines with goal-oriented study for specific qualifications to yield success in exams as well as more general mastery of the subject.
Availability: Any time, weekday evenings preferred.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have supervised small groups of both first and second year undergraduates at the University of Cambridge for a range of linguistics papers, covering syntax, semantics, and linguistic typology. I have also given a graduate-level seminar on the syntactic properties of sign languages, as well as a series of seminars on biological approaches to linguistics. Prior to my degree I have tutored a student in AS-level Biology.
