Information about Michael

Hi I am 29 year-old, highly qualified, friendly and experienced sociology teacher who has a background in teaching sociology at both A-level and degree standard. I am passionate about my students reaching the highest possible standards for their work and ultimately their grades. I am an approachable teacher who is used to working with students of all abilities, and I pride myself on tailoring sociology to the individual needs of the learner. I enjoy making the subject accessible for students who might be struggling in school/college and require extra support, but also I am very well-suited to stretching students looking for the highest possible grades due to my experience in teaching the subject in a Higher Education context. Though my primary experience for teaching is based on A-levels, I am open to tutoring Access to HE and degree students also due to my experience in these areas as well.

Availability: I can accommodate weekday evenings and over weekends I am flexible. I am based in Farnborough, Hampshire, and am therefore happy to travel to a student`s home within a ten to fifteen mile radius - this would include Farnborough, Farnham, Yateley, Sandhurst, Guildford, Woking, Bracknell, Fleet, Camberley, Hook, Alton.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I have a wide range of experience in sociology, both in terms of research and teaching. I have a bachelor`s degree, master`s degree and PhD in sociology from Loughborough University and have experience working on sociological research projects.

I have taught sociology for seven years starting out lecturing at Loughborough University to students of all three years. I started my first permanent teaching post in 2015 at an Ofsted excellent-rated Further Education college where I taught sociology A-Level (AQA specification) receiving three years of consistently strong results in my subject. I also taught sociology to Access to HE students and degree students (Levels 4,5 and 6) across a range of modules, therefore I am confident with students across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. I also taught A-level media studies in this period providing me with a wider understanding of the demands of A-levels and different strategies for student success. During this period I obtained a PGCE in the lifelong learning sector accredited by the University of Greenwich.

I have since moved on to another Ofsted excellent-rated sixth form college which has a fantastic reputation for both student experience and attainment. I now teach to the OCR specification for A-level sociology so I am proficient in both OCR and AQA specifications for the subject. I have received training from both exam boards in how to write exam questions and specialised techniques to get marks.

I pride myself on the importance of teaching students about the structure of exam papers and how to meet the requirements of an exam board for each individual question. I specialise in essay-writing skills, improving overall studying strategies and revision techniques and how to deal with the pressures of exams. I have personally overseen some excellent success stories in terms of students going from dropping out of one college, to receiving A*s two years later in the same subject, from students who were looking at gaining D grades, but coming out with Bs due to an increased focus on revision strategies and exam technique.

I have a wide ranging sociological knowledge from my experience across different levels and exam boards, and have always performed very well in terms of observations of my teaching (receiving grade one both internally and externally) and student evaluations.
