Information about James

I am a Materials Science and Engineering graduate from The University of Sheffield achieving a 1st class master`s degree. I have always wanted to be a teacher as I have such a passion for the STEM subjects and want to bring out the same excitement I feel in other people. I am currently in the application stream for Teach First, hoping to become a secondary school Physics teacher, teaching Physics at A level, and the other sciences at GCSE. I have excellent knowledge of the STEM subjects due to my degree requiring mastery of Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

I have had many different styles of employment including working as a lifeguard, a labourer on a building site, a research assistant in a university laboratory, and in an office in a multinational engineering firm. I believe these experiences have given me the ability to communicate with many different people effectively, adjusting my communication style according to the person I am engaging. Throughout my degree due to being known to lower years through captaining of the Materials Science football team, I have helped many people with their degree understanding, and appreciate how everyone`s brain works differently and you must tailor your explanation and working to suit the individual.

I believe my lifelong passion for teaching, with my understanding of the STEM subjects and my people skills make me a perfect candidate for a role as a science tutor. The sciences are often seen as dull due to the nature of the syllabus; however, I would say they are simply not explained correctly. Once the core concepts have been grasped, everything else falls into place and its very rewarding to watch someone`s inquisitiveness grow along with their understanding.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I have lots of experience in explaining concepts of my degree to younger years, as well as assisting younger family members with their school studies. I have no experience within a school due to undertaking different employment throughout my life and focusing on my University degree, but am confident in my knowledge of the STEM subjects and my communication and people skills to be a great tutor.
