Information about Elia
A native Greek speaker, I have 5 years of teaching experience. I have learnt French, German to fluency, and a bit of Portuguese, so I know the difficulties, frustrations and joys of learning a language! I am fluent in English and Greek and I have also studied Greek Paleography (reading manuscri pts) and Ancient Greek at an intermediate level. I have an excellent nuance of language and knowledge of grammar.
I am available to teach Greek in person. I can also help with Contemporary Philosophy, Art History and Architectural Theory.
Holder of postgraduate degrees in architecture (National Technical University of Athens), philosophy of culture (Universitaet Stuttgart), contemporary critique (Universite Paris VIII) and of a PhD in Humanities and Cultural Studies, I have taught a variety of modules at Birkbeck and the London College of Communication (UAL). I have 7 years of teaching experience at graduate level as a teaching assistant, associate lecturer, guest lecturer, seminar leader, dissertation tutor, coursework marker and moderator. I also have a proven record of my ability to supervise academic work, having functioned as mentor of a dozen BA students during the period of drafting their proposals and selecting their dissertation topic.
Having recently worked towards a HEA Fellowship, I have developed an interest in diversity and inclusion preferably in arts, design and communication, and further in education. The PGCert in Academic Practice provided me with contemporary theories that informed my teaching, especially in terms of inclusivity and student relevance.
I tailor my lessons to suit the learner - whatever their goal or focus. It is my mission to help the student achieve their goals and more than they thought possible.
I try to make the lessons fun and interesting!
When teaching Greek, I generally concentrate on speaking, writing and context, allowing the learner to communicate in day-to-day situations but also to get a sense of the Greek culture through the vehicle of logos. I take all levels from beginners to preparation for B2 exams.

As an undergraduate architecture student, I assisted many of my classmates with essays, projects, and studying for exams. During my postgraduate studies, I provided guidance to graduates and young professionals with drafting CVs, cover letters and grant applications, and prepared them for job interviews.
My position as Associate Tutor at the School of Arts, Birkbeck has equipped me with invaluable experience in preparing for and delivering high quality learning practice to BA students (in Art History and in Arts and Humanities). I learnt how to identify and tackle a variety of needs as students at London`s largest evening university are diverse not only in terms of ethnic or cultural backgrounds but also because they study full- or part-time, stemming from different career paths and ranging from age 18 to 75. My recent position as Associate Lecturer at the London College of Communication strengthened my competencies in course planning and evaluation (BA Advertising, BA Spatial Design). The pastoral aspect of both teaching roles also included 1:1 tutorials, peer observation, group tutorials and guidance to BA students during the process of selecting their dissertation topic.
I recently registered with The Arts Emergency charity to join the mentoring project and provide guidance to students from less advantaged backgrounds who want to identify and access the opportunities available to them in higher education and the creative industries.
