Information about Sylvie

Fluent French tutor who has lived, studied and worked in French speaking countries for 9 years. Oxford graduate with a Masters from France.

Bonjour! I am a bilingual French English speaker. I grew up in France, Switzerland and England. After studying French at the University of Oxford (including a year abroad in Montreal), I moved to Paris to work and to pursue my studies. I graduated with a Masters in International Relations from France’s leading Institute for Political Sciences (Sciences Po-Paris).

I then moved to Brussels and embarked on a seven-year French-speaking career in international development with a focus on francophone Africa. This career involved supporting, mentoring and training people in French for whom French was not their mother tongue.

I am passionate about building people’s skills and supporting them to learn and develop in the direction they wish to. I appreciate how useful and satisfying it is to be able to communicate in a foreign language and to connect with people from other countries and cultures via a common language.

I work as a French tutor in Chester and the surrounding area. I thoroughly enjoy supporting people of all ages to develop their French language skills and to explore the cultures of French-speaking countries. I have travelled extensively and love exploring the French speaking world!

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have experience teaching French and English as foreign languages both 1-to-1 tutoring and in classroom settings. I teach children and adults.

Here is a review from the mother of a GCSE student I tutored before joining this website:
“Sylvie worked with my son on his French oral exams – both his mock and the final exam. She corrected his French mistakes and then gently encouraged him to concentrate on getting the detail and the pronunciation correct. She helped him consider the content, taught him useful additional vocabulary and expressions to demonstrate a sophisticated use of the language and therefore achieve a higher grade. She did it all with a cheerful, supportive demeanour. I would definitely recommend her as a French tutor for anyone needing assistance.”

My approach to language teaching is practical, playful, immersive and fun.

In addition to traditional tried and tested language learning techniques, my classes involve creative approaches such as learning in situ and learning by doing. These can include role-plays, games, visits and walks that get you out and about and putting your French skills into practice.

My aim is to build your confidence and ability to communicate effectively in French in a way that you enjoy and find productive. I recognise the importance of helping you set and reach achievable short-term and long-term goals.

I tailor classes in response to your objectives, level, interests and how you learn best. I choose the techniques and teaching tools best suited to your learning style, whether visual, audio or kinesthetic.

I provide personalised 1-to-1 French tuition for:
a) Students studying for their GCSE, A-Level, IB or university degree
b) Individuals seeking to learn a second language for pure enjoyment, to improve their holiday experience, to prepare a move abroad or increase their job prospects
c) Employees of a business or organisation wishing to learn or refresh their French, and to specialise in a particular area of the French language for professional reasons.

I am very familiar with the French GCSE, A-Level (notably OCR, EDEXCEL, AQA and WJEC) and International Baccalaureate curriculums and will help you master the vocabulary, grammar, expressions and phrases required to enable you to succeed in your assignments and sit your exams with confidence.

School and university students, I offer tailor-made classes to help you:
• with the topics covered in your classes at school, college or at university
• with your homework or assignments
• to master a particular area you feel weaker at or unclear about
• gain confidence in your spoken, written or comprehension abilities
• prepare for specific exams.

I provide the learning materials, worksheets, games and exercises required for our sessions. These are included in the hourly class rate.

I have clean, enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check reports for working with both children and vulnerable adults. I am registered on the DBS Update service for working with children. All certificates and access to the Update Service are available on request.

Sylvie is doing a family group lesson with myself and my two young children. She makes each lesson interesting and fun tayloring the class to the children’s interests. I wanted the class to be fun and informal and it is. An excellent tutor.
