Information about Hanna
With over five years of experience, I believe I have created a style of tutoring which boosts student confidence, allows them to enjoy the subject, and thereby make progress.
As a friendly and patient tutor, I offer your son or daughter the opportunity to learn at their own pace, whilst focusing on areas they need the most help with. I also have a counselling qualification, and I can use this to calm nerves, create positive thought patterns, and boost your child`s self-esteem and confidence. Since I believe learning should be enjoyable and student-centred, I like to give my students options. They can either cover the texts they are studying at school, or pick their own texts to study with me. This way, they have some independence in their learning and also greater responsibility.
Availability: I am now available in the morning and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have been working within the education sector since 2015. During this time, I have been a trainee teacher, a teaching assistant, and a substitute teacher. In 2017, I became a tutor and have since tutored a range of students of various ages, backgrounds, and levels. To date, I have taught over 600 hours of English language/ literature lessons and over 500 hours of English as an Additional Language (EAL) lessons. During this time, I have learnt how students perform at their best, what engages them, and what boosts their confidence.
On average, students grades have increased by 1-2 levels with me when having lessons for 30+ hours. My most recent student (who is finishing her GCSE`s in May 2021) went from thinking English was an `okay` subject to improving by two levels (she went from level 6 to an estimated level 8) and is now going to study English literature and language at A Level. In total, she had 29 hours of tutoring with me.
After our last session, her mother sent me the following review:
`I just wanted to say thank you so much to Hanna for teaching H****** GCSE English. The confidence from where she was at the start and where she is now is fantastic, as well as her ability. She has been working really hard.
Hanna has been great; she has installed that confidence and guided her during the especially tough time last year with Covid when all lessons were online. Hannas manner of teaching and style has really been a great driver in H****** doing so well. Her predicted grades for GCSE are A. Learning at school isnt enough and having 1:1 tutoring really does offer lots of benefits. Thank you once again Hanna for all the support you have provided H******.`
The structure of each lesson is normally as follows:
- Opening (five minutes): student check-in (how school/ life has been the past week and how they found the homework).
- Starter activity (5-10 minutes): focusing on a smaller detail which the student needs to practice (such as punctuation, vocabulary, identifying language features etc).
- Main activity (35-40 minutes): this can be writing, comprehension, analysis, discussion (or a mixture).
- Summary (5 minutes): what the student has learnt today, what they did well, and what could be improved/ practiced for homework.
For years 9-11, I charge £30 per hour. Any child below this age is £25 per hour. This includes the tutoring hour itself, the careful preparation of each lesson, and the availability to mark homework if it is sent to me by email.
