Information about Tim
Im a 22 year old student from Nottinghamshire. Ive recently completed a BA Hons in English Literature and History from the University of York. Im starting my PGCE in January 2021 working towards Qualified Teacher Status at a Primary School Level. Im passionate about teaching and relish each opportunity to help people learn. Ive studied a lot of Humanities subjects throughout school and would feel happy and confident in educating anyone on topics such as History and English Language / Literature from Primary to Degree Level.
Willing to travel: 20 miles
Experience: Ive worked in several primary schools in Yorkshire and the Inner City of Nottingham. Ive worked with a broad range of students from different age groups, planning interventions and whole lessons which I have taught to full classes. Ive worked as both a Teaching Assistant and Teacher in primary schools and have the invaluable experience of being able to plan and carry out my own lessons seeing first-hand how children respond to the prepared material and what can be done to help them learn better. Additionally, Ive worked with secondary school pupils helping students with SEN or lower than average reading ages make strides when it came to their understanding and master of the written word. Finally, at University through seminars and group projects Ive had the chance to teach and inform my peers, through presentations and constructive critiques of their essays. This has allowed me to not only become a better teacher but a better learner which can further inform teaching.
Teaching is a collaborative dialogue between two people. The best part about tutoring one to one is that the teaching can be crafted and specialised to each person in a way that simply isnt doable in the classroom. I take a patient ground-up approach to teaching, starting at the most simple concepts to affirm understanding. From there I try to make the learning as exciting as possible, inviting chances for discussion and debate both to check and deepen understanding. At a primary level, spotting misconceptions and having the opportunity to study and solve them is invaluable to understanding how children learn. For secondary and A-Level pupils, being able to rationalise and explain their thinking with the help of a tutor to better illustrate their points and deepen their thinking is key to picking up marks for exams. This is even more essential at University where being able to draw upon examples and present a convincing case is paramount to achieving a 1st. For casual learners too, the opportunity to talk about ideas presented in an exciting and informative way is what makes both learning and teaching so invaluable. What connects all of these is open discussion with specific and helpful resources. Ill use past papers, exam style questions and essays where appropriate to help students learn the content for exams and appropriate examples and fun resources to excite pupils to learn and their capacity to achieve.
