Information about Nathan

Having achieved 7 A*s and 2 As at GCSE, before 3 A grades (English Language, History, General Studies) and a B in Geography at A-level, I realised education was a field I enjoyed and wanted to pursue. Therefore, I completed an Education Studies and History degree at Durham University, before going on to teach at the hugely successful Bryanston Independent School in Dorset for 6 years (2008-2014). My track record of GCSE and A-level results is excellent with every student achieving at least one grade higher than predicted. I have experience in a variety of units and topics ranging from Medieval Britain and early modern Europe, to post WW2 Britain. However, I specialise in the Tudor period. I`m currently taking a break from teaching to pursue a running career but want to keep my teaching experience up to date. Teaching and tutoring is something I really enjoy and will go back to full time in the future. I believe my various roles at Bryanston, alongside my experience as a top level athlete, enable me to help and inspire students from all walks of life to maximize their full potential and achieve their desired goals.

Availability: Weekends and occasionally evenings

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience: At Bryanston I started as an academic resident before completing a GTP teaching qualification in History, which included teaching practice in a state secondary school and primary school. Then I completed my NQT qualification before going on to mentor other GTP students and American post-graduate trainee teachers. I taught Year 9 History for 6 years, GCSE History for 6 years, AS-level History for 4 years, A-level History coursework for 3 years. I also taught International Baccalaureate History for a year. I completed a number of continuous professional development (CPD) courses such as implementing and marking A-level coursework, improving sixth form study skills, use of IT in the classroom (iPad apps). On top of this I was a resident throughout my time, in both Senior and Junior boys (assistant housemaster) boarding houses so have extensive knowledge and experience of working with 14-18 students. I was also a tutor (one-to-one) to 12 students throughout the 6 years which involved weekly meetings to ensure they maximised their potential in academic, sporting and pastoral arenas. I also regularly led revision and study skill sessions, particularly during the exam period. My other roles included being Head of Cross-country and Assistant Head of Athletics. I`m also currently in the process of becoming an exam assessor for OCR. This knowledge and experience, as well as my own GCSE and A-level qualifications, allows me to also provide reading, writing and study skills tutoring.
