Information about Al

Hi I am Al, I have been playing guitar since 1998. I attended The Academy of Contemporary Music between 2004-08. I attained my PGCE in 2016.

I’d first like to talk about my approach and thinking towards studying music then about how I teach.

I believe that studying any creative art is one of life’s higher callings whether we are doing it for ourselves or want to share that with others, on any scale. Creative arts transcend all things while music is the one language we can all understand, be effected by, resonate with and allows us to communicate with people from across the globe.

My experience working in music has taken many forms which has allowed me access to different ideas, genres, situations, audiences, countries while requiring me to play in a wide range of styles. What has always been the most important thing to me is when people are sincere in their music, they are playing it because they believe it, it is important to them.

We all engage with music for different reasons, some of us want to blow off steam after a long day, a vehicle for escapism, others want to write songs while some want to take it as far as they possibly can. All of these reasons are equally valid and I respect them all.

What is important to me is that I offer myself to all of my students as a guide. Some of us will work together for a short time, others for a years however my ambition for any student is that they grow beyond what they can learn from me while developing their own identity within the parameters of their relationship with music.

I offer two services: Further Education Music Tuition (A Level/BTEC) and Guitar.

FE Music (A Level/BTEC):

With music I have extensive experience teaching in both mainstream schools and specialist colleges. I have delivered curriculum at Key stage 3 & 4 to secondary, worked as a peri teacher at primary but my real strength and home is at key stage 5 (further education: A Level & BTEC).

This is because it is where music gets interesting and more involved, people working at this level have chosen to follow a more creative path or accept that creativity has a level of importance that warrants study beyond school.

It is these people I believe I am best positioned to work with as both my experience as a lecturer and course manager give me an insight in how to prepare students for the best possible results. We can be more creative at this level, discuss abstract ideas, engage in deeper level thinking which is a very rewarding process for all parties involved.

Guitar:

While there are a wealth of amazing resources out there to turn anyone from guitar zero to hero, my stance is to ‘Take the Warrior’s Path’ when working with music. This means we identify why you are doing it, your end goal and choosing the appropriate path to attain that. Usually we will find that we explore a variety of avenues on the way and when we reach the goal, we may realise that on that horizon lies another vista of experience to be explored.

It is my mission to take you from A to B in a way that is appropriate for you as an individual regardless of your age, background or ambitions. I offer classes at this price because I bring not only my skills as a musician and educator but years of experience working across the musical spectrum. It is important to me that all students understand that when we are working together we leave everything else at the door so we are free to explore music within our own terms. Block booking discount available for 10 sessions.

I am currently completing my sign off process as an RSL awards (Rockschool) examiner, I have used their syllabus in my teaching practice since 2009 and also in my work at Leicester College and Access to Music. I am able to take students on graded pathways as well as personalised learning that covers parallel content but without the exams.

Thank you for visiting my profile, if what I have written sounds interesting to you, please feel free to message me and we can discuss how I can help you.
