Information about Emily

Hello, my name is Emily.

I am a positive, friendly and creative individual and I have enjoyed working with children for almost all of my working life. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than helping children work towards that lightbulb moment and getting the results that they need to help them on their way to their best future possible.

I am currently a full-time year three teacher in the independent sector, in Central London. I am well-experienced in tutoring from years 1 - 5, with a focus towards ISEB 11+ examinations in later primary years.

I am a strong believer of independent learning through practice and creativity. I create a safe space for pupils to develop independence of thought, with room to make mistakes; this is how we learn. With appropriate scaffolding in place to support progress, I work with the pupil towards achieving their targets.

Whilst ticking off curriculum goals, I aspire to keep each lesson varied and novel in some way. This is to ensure that learning doesn`t become repetitive; through my teaching experience thus far, I have learnt that variation and application to real life, current affairs or topics that are interesting to the pupil is how learning is best retained.

I am currently offering lessons in English and maths to years 2-6; this can be inclusive of 11+ or sats preparation.

Experience: I have been teaching or working with children for 7 years now, and I spent a lot of time at University volunteering as a literacy assistant prior to that.

I first began teaching KS1 and KS2 English in Hong Kong in early 2016. This involved courses geared around Trinity classes, Cambridge English and beginner-advanced phonics. I was promoted to the role of `Centre Head Teacher`, which ultimately involved liaising between the centre manager and the teaching team in curriculum production. I also privately tutored a 15 year old student with his grammar and writing comprehension.

After 18 months of successfully guiding students through their Trinity and Cambridge exams, I moved to South Korea to continue teaching English. I was soon promoted to the more advanced English class known as `Athena`, which involved prepping children aged 9-11 for their interviews to enter middle school. We had a great success rate!

Since moving to London in January 2019, I have worked across two independent schools. From January 2019 - July 2019, I worked in the clubs team at Holy Cross Prep School. This involved the administrative duties of communicating with parents, alongside getting stuck in and helping out in a variety of sporty and creative clubs.

I then moved to my current independent school in South Kensington as a year 2 Teaching Assistant. I ran various booster groups of 2-6 children in Maths and English, and am delighted to say that they made excellent progress with their learning. In September 2020, I finally began and completed my UK-based teacher training within my school. Upon completion, the school kept me on as a Year Three teacher, where I am now.

5/5 Rating

The relationship between tutor and tutee is just as important, if not more so, as the quality of tuition. The ability to keep a 5 year old regularly engaged for an hour online is a rare skill that Ms Emily has in abundance and to which our daughter has taken to with habitual familiarity and longing. We`re so grateful to have found Ms Emily and we`re all in a better place for it. Absolutely first rate tuition.
