Information about Stuart

My name is Stuart and I'm 33 years old living in Lancaster. I'm served in the British Army for 5 years and left to read Law at Lancaster University. After working for a law firm I discovered that it wasn't for me and decided to pursue my lifelong dream of practicing medicine. I studied for my GCSEs and gained a place at the Manchester College's Access to Medicine course. At this time the tuition fees rose and I had to take a year out to save for medical school. If all goes to plan, fingers crossed, i start in September 2012 in London. I currently work at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary as a clinical support worker, which I love as a job but it isn't enough for me. I enjoy working with children and teenagers and have a passion for the science subjects and maths, which I feel I can teach to young people who might be struggling or just need extra tuition to attain good exam results. I enjoy reading, using the gym, DIY, my job!!! And working with children.

Availability: Very Flexible, Weeknights and weekends

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I have no teaching qualifications for working in schools but I do have teaching experience. Whilst in the British Army I was a PTI and used to teach sports to the children from military families within my garrison in Germany. These included football, sports days with a variety of sports and activities and boxing and weightlifting for the teenagers. I have volunteered to work in the Kirkham prison education centre, teaching maths and english to the inmates. During my studying for medical school I taught myself alongside helping others in my class through the GCSE maths and science subjects. This I discovered I had an apptitude for and started to research the examining bodies used by the various schools in my area. I now have a firm understanding of the curriculum of the subects I wish to tutor in and a method of studying exam techniques aid in gaining good grades. I also assisted in the teaching of first aid for the St John Ambulance cadets aged between 10 and 18. All this experience along with my own knowledge has given me the confidence to want to tutor children and teenagers to help them achieve their full potential.

My approach to tutoring is simple, make it enjoyable and make it easy. I would ask the tutee what they want to achieve whilst being tutored and help them to determine a plan of study with clear achievable goals. I would make the tutee feel good about reaching their goals and want to learn more. I have a bubbly personality and this, I think, is essential to tutoring as my sessions would be fun and enjoyable, not like at school where the setting is formal and competitive. I would work with the parents as well as the tutee in determining the best possible lesson and give a lesson plan prior to the lesson so they can be involved throughout. My lessons would focus on the examining body's curriculum of the tutee's school and could be anything from exam techniques to subject knowledge, application of that knowledge or just learning through interest. My approach would be different for tutoring children taking their 11+ exam as they are younger and would need a more focused approach on subjects not specifically taught such as non-verbal reasoning. As law is an ever increasing subject among GCSE pupils and first aid is becoming more and more practical in everyday life, I am offering tuition in these subjects aswell as Human Physiology and Health.
