I appreciate that Cumbria is a large, rural county so I do offer once a month extended lessons or bi weekly to reduce travelling costs, or I offer internet and email lessons for those weeks we don't actually sit face-to-face. I also do 'crammer sessions' which are intensive for impending exams, especially GCSE, AS and A2. These contain intensive work but I also understand and support the student at these stressful times and help with last minute strategies, study tips and general organisation.
I am renown for my support and going the extra mile and in no respect are these meant to be bunny in the headlight sessions! Although some parents are amused at the novel concentration they children have when faced with deadlines. All that said, I normally see my tutees on a weekly basis, many of whom come from recommendation.
I am available part of the weekend and can travel if needed. To give you an idea of my student base, at the moment I have KS2 and KS3 literacy support, GCSE, A2 Level, a MSc Student needing academic English and a nurse needing assistance with her dissertation.
I am an energetic person who has a variety of interests including competitive sport, often to the intrigue of my tutees who are astounded to know I have another life! I have an empathy with challenging, disaffected or pupils with low esteem. I also have an intermediate certificate in counselling skills which has helped tremendously with the holistic approach I have to my tutees. For me tutoring is not only about academic support but mentoring and advising and to this end I often go beyond the academic subject to explain things more philosophically to a tutee or support them in a career change etc.
I have many students who remain in touch after they have finished uni which is lovely as all too often you don't witness how they develop as individuals.
I appreciate in these times that my hourly rate may seem expensive, but when you consider this is for an individual's future and reduces the stress immensely, I'm sure you would want the most qualified individual to support them and not some undergraduate masquerading as an experienced teacher. Having studied English at university does not mean you can teach it or someone with a PGCE in another subject does not have the knowledge, skills or experience to teach English. I have made this point as I occasionally get parents who have seen 'tutors' who offer widely below the market rate charges and this is often the reason why - they simply are not qualified as a specialist English teacher and examiner. You wouldn't afterall let a apprentice plumber tackle your plumbing problems and unfortunately genuine experience and knowledge comes at a price, like all things in life. I have started booking sessions in advance for a reduction, but beyond this I am restricted in all fairness and afterall teaching is a profession. Do get in touch if you would like to discuss anything of simply want clarification.
