German (primary, ks3, gcse, adult-learner, a-level)
History (ks3, gcse, a-level)
Law (gcse)
Spanish (primary, ks3, gcse, adult-learner, a-level)
I am currently studying for a Law (Jurisprudence) degree at New College, the University of Oxford. Over Easter and Summer I am looking to tutor A level standard students in Spanish and/or German, and GCSE standard students in various subjects, including sciences, maths and languages.
I am 18 years old, patient and personable. In my spare time I play ice hockey and rugby and captain my local cricket team. Playing the keyboard throughout my younger years in school enabled me to attain Grade 4 Keyboard. Being a member of the Scout movement from a very young age until the age of 18 has also helped to maintain an interest in a range of activities, with my love of rock climbing being a manifestation of this interest.
I still maintain contact with several friends in Germany and Spain and frequently converse with my Chilean uncle in Spanish. With my degree I would love to become a barrister, but I have not ruled out the option of a language-related job or becoming a solicitor.
Availability: I am available from the 17th of March - 16th April 2012 and then from early to mid June until the end of September over the summer. I would like to go on holiday at some point over the summer, but am willing to be as flexible as I can, so as to suit your requirements.
I live just north of Bristol, but will travel if necessary, as I have a full driver`s license.
If absolutely necessary, a CRB check will be obtained.
Willing to travel: 30 miles
Experience: I already have experience of tutoring GCSE level students, having helped my brother several times with his language exams. During my time as a sixth former at Katharine Lady Berkeley`s School, I regularly helped speak with GCSE German pupils during my free periods in the build up to their oral exams. Languages are my passion, so much so that I actually applied to study Law with Spanish at many universities and received an offer to study the Magister Law degree at Exeter University, from which I would also have received a qualifying German law degree.
During year 12, I worked abroad in both Spain and Germany. In Spain I worked within the Secondary school for a week, talking with the younger children and giving presentations to them about various aspects of English life. I spoke English and was able to translate words into Spanish which they could not understand. I still travel to Spain, spending 3 weeks there last summer with my former exchange.
In Germany, I worked in the `Landgericht` (the German equivalent of our Crown Court) for one week. Whilst there I followed several `Richter` (Judges) and watched many different cases, covering various aspects from Copyright Law to Road Traffic Incidents. I studied some basic principles of the German law and had an opportunity to practice my language skills all the time whilst having matters explained to me by the judge who would be hearing the case.
When I was 17, my school offered the opportunity to study Italian. I took this opportunity and, with little more than 20 hours of tuition, achieved a grade `B` overall in Italian. I am unable to converse extensively in Italian, however I understand a lot of it and I can comprehend most of a written Italian text.
I was Head Boy of my school during my final year, a job which required good people skills, ability to represent the school at events and whilst making speeches in front of crowds and good organisation. At the end of my secondary schooling, I was awarded the Hornsby Cup for services to the school and the John & Katie Lee Modern Languages Prize for best overall performance in A Level languages.
Qualifications: I have 7 GCSE`s at `A star` level, including German, Spanish, Business Studies, History and English Literature. I have a further 5 GCSE`s at a grade `A`, and grade `B` Italian.
Overall performance at A level was an `A star` in German, and an `A` in both Spanish and History.
The John & Katie Lee Modern Languages Prize for best overall performance in A Level languages.
