Information about Jeannie

I am an Honours graduate (Maths and Engineering). I have ten years experience in telecoms engineering/regulation roles and nine years experience as a personal tutor. I also hold a 2013 PVG certificate, can provide nine years worth of student references, and can provide evidence of all qualifications/awards on request. I have a BSc Open (Hons) and have studied the following modules: `Digital Communications`, `Electronic Materials - Inside Electronic Devices`, `Keeping Ahead in ICT`, `Technologies for Digital Media`, `Pure Maths` and `Graphs, Networks and Design`. I also have an HND (merit) in Telecoms. All of my SQA Advanced Higher/Higher grades are at A and all of my Standard Grades are at grade 1. I have a 2016 Intensive German qualification (grade A) from Dundee university. I have also won a number of academic/vocational awards:

2004 Runner up for the “Mary George Memorial” Engineering Award (IIE).
2001 “Outstanding Student of the Year in Mechanical/Electrical Studies”
(Inverness College)
2000 ‘Best Student in Engineering Studies’. (Inverness College)
2000 Winner of the “Caroline Haslett Memorial” Engineering Scholarship (IIE).

In addition, I have completed numerous short courses e.g. City and Guilds wiring regulations ECDL advanced Powerpoint and Excel Cisco programming PLC (Mitsubishi) programming aviation radio courses (e.g. Flight Information Service Officer /Air-Ground/Wray Castle`s Aeronautical Radio) GVF VSAT installation and maintenance microwave links and measurements various amateur radio qualifications aerial rigging etc.

I am considered to be knowledgeable, patient and reliable. I understand the need to put students at ease when studying potentially intimidating subjects such as maths, physics or chemistry and I try to encourage students to fulfill their potential by working hard and, most of all, by learning to enjoy what they study. I also feel that it`s important that students don`t view their exams as simply a memory test i.e. it`s vital that students can use problem-solving principles and develop familiarity with a range of alternative methods so as to evaluate any `facts` that they may have forgotten/never understood in the first place so that they can prove the validity of certain ideas for themselves and can start to identify similarities between subject concepts using fundamental principles. I understand the importance of encouraging students to develop estimation, pattern recognition and visualisation skills. This approach can also improve problem solving ability in general.

I review Powerpoint presentations during sessions and go through past papers/exercises with students. I am very exam-focused (when appropriate) but sometimes also supply extra important insights on the subject from, for example, an industry/commercial perspective. I can also provide extra feedback and homework via email free of charge. I can also mark homework/assignments outwith session times free of charge.

I have a vast range of high quality educational materials, many of which are very interactive (using for example educational software packages such as `Mathematica 8` / `MathCad` and by using Powerpoint for maths quizzes in the style of `Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?` / for running animations or embedded videos of chemical / physical processes) so that the learning experience can be fun and interesting (especially for primary school students) and so that, for example, the practical applications of some subject areas can be more fully explained.

I have a wide selection of high quality children`s story books (e.g. by Disney, Roald Dahl, Dr. Seuss, and Julia Donaldson) and activity packs (e.g. phonics dominoes, geometric 2D and 3D shapes in plastic and for making with Play-Doh cutters, write-on clocks, comprehension cards for all primary reading levels, introductory science kits, fractions jigsaws and blocks, play mats, Maths `Secret Scholar` booklets etc).

I have accumulated detailed notes and presentations on dozens of texts currently studied for CfE National and Higher English and have sample critical essays for all of them. I can show students how to go about efficiently planning, constructing and proof-reading their essays and make sure that they fully understand any essay requirements. I also have numerous presentations on close reading techniques. I have experience in carrying out English as a Foreign Language (ESL) assessments and customised learning programmes.

I often refer students to the `BBC Bitesize`, `Glow`, `TES` and Herriot Watt `Scholar` sites as well for further source material and also adapt resources as required. I have all required up-to-date textbooks (by publishers including TeeJay, Leckie and Leckie, Heinemann and Bright Red in addition to university publishers such as Oxford University Press), revision books and twenty years worth of past papers and solutions. I adapt my course materials to fit any specific needs of the student. I am also very pro-active when it comes to trying to identify any associated potential problems which may be holding back a student e.g. relating to the organisation of revision materials / schedules on the part of the student.

I can assist with personal statements for UCAS guideline-compliant applications and have sample statements for applications for a variety of specific subjects.

I am very familiar with the requirements of the new CfE courses and have extensive resources directly relating to this e.g. I have full sets of teaching resources, homeworks, practice NABs and prelims etc currently used by secondary schools to teach the CfE. I also have resources on the "New" higher Maths as well as the "Revised" Higher Physics courses.

Group bookings:

Why not cut costs by arranging a group booking? My hourly rate does not change whether I tutor 1 student or up to 5 students at a time (the group would need to be studying the same subject and level) so students have the option of splitting the cost of a tutoring session between themselves.

I can also provide online tuition via Skype / email.

Please let me know in advance if a student is not allowed sweets/biscuits or if there are any allergies or other medical problems of which I need to be aware. For example, I have two cats so please let me know if anyone suffers from cat allergies before tuition commences.

Pens/pencils/drafting instruments/jotters/paper etc are provided for students` use during tutorials.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: 9 years tutoring experience in primary school (language and maths) to university level (e.g. Herriot Watt`s `Foundation maths C` course) subjects. 2 months secondary school mathematics teaching experience. 1 week`s primary school experience.
