Information about Harley

I am currently working as a doctorate student at the University of Sussex. My degree involves understanding the barriers to adoption of farmer-orientated technology research and development in international research organisations. The degree is a synthesis of my academic interests to date, which include natural and environmental sciences, as well as sociology.

Other interests include philosophy, theology and yoga, as well as enjoying the outdoors, conservation, fitness, skating, listening to live music, reading poetry and drawing! I have a variety of interests and hobbies, but not always enough time to devote to all of them.

I have a deep commitment to learning and relating what I learn to the world around me. I feel privileged that I can draw upon a breadth of experience, in a number of fields, and convey this through adding context and further interest to standardised syllabi.

I view tutoring as a vastly different experience to learning in a classroom environment. The nature of one-to-one or small group tuition presents more opportunities for the tutor to understand the individual strengths and needs of the tutee. Through adopting a patient and sympathetic approach and playing to the strengths of the tutee, the tutoring session can form a space in which the tutee can feel confident in his or her abilities.

The one aspect of tutoring that I feel most strongly about is that if a tutee is struggling with a particular topic, then it is likely that this is because it does not play to the strengths of the tutee. The onus is therefore on the tutor to find an appropriate method of communicating the information either through, analogy, altering the context, or changing the mode of learning. This tutee-centred approach to learning has the potential to develop self-confidence and inspire interest in learning.

Depending on the needs of the tutee, sessions can be structured in a number of ways but usually consist of the following:

• Listing and review of current academic strengths and weaknesses.
• Creation of a learning plan to address the above.
• Analysis and improvement of current study skills.
• Addressing particular areas of concern raised by the tutee.
• The opportunity to work through school work or past papers.
• The use of multimedia to support learning objectives.
• Setting of work/revision to do between sessions.

After each session a brief progress report is written for the parents presenting the topics covered as well as progress made towards goals listed in the learning plan.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Availability: I am a flexible tutor and can generally arrange my time to suit the schedule of the tutee, although I do prefer evenings and weekends.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I previously acted as a tutor for Imperial Tutors, a London based tutoring agency, teaching science and maths at a GCSE level over the course of a year. Throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees I have developed a number of transferable skills and competences relating to conveying information on both a group and individual level. I have also taken a humanities course in communicating science to the media. I feel confident to teach the sciences and maths at a GCSE level and below, as well as biology, chemistry and geography at A-level. I can also tutor biochemistry and environmental sciences at an undergraduate level.
