I am a lively, interested and fun person who, moreover, will never give up. With both History and English I am firmly convinced that there is always 'a way in', no matter how difficult or impenetrable a subject may seem to a pupil!
I am also known for my ability not only to make students laugh while learning but to gain the coveted 'Ahhh!' from those who finally understand something with which they had previously struggled. Fundamentally, I believe that learning is better when it's fun and to this end try my best to bring in a variety of sources (and occasionally a bit of re-enactment!) to bring the past alive.
Availability: Weekends, evenings and daytime
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I have always enjoyed engaging with students. Most recently I have completed periods of work experience at Bournemouth School for Girls and Hardley School, as well as helping pupils with their reading at my local primary school in my spare time. I have been lucky enough always to have heard pupils hopefully ask 'Is she coming back, sir?' every time I have been into a school!
At Cambridge I was part of the university access schemes and had numerous shadow-students. This was never more rewarding than when one of my shadows described the experience as 'wonderful' and left not only sure that she wished to continue into higher education but more confident in her ability to apply to Oxbridge. Moreover, I have continued this access work outside the university environment; re-visiting my school to talk to students considering applying to Oxbridge, and acting as a student mentor for The Brightside Trust.
During my time at sixth form, I gave assemblies on fair trade as part of my role in Eco Schools and on the Holocaust after my visit to Auschwitz, helped with Learning Support, and led Year 8 Student Council. While after finishing my A-Levels, I worked for the English department to further acquaint myself with the practical side of teaching.
