As of october 2011 I will be a first year undergraduate reading Classics tripos at Christ's College Cambridge and previously attended St. James Indepenent School for boys. My interests include travelling (last summer I journeyed across the Far East and Australasia), watching good films, cycling and playing Monopoly.
I am a calm, friendly person, although equally I'm a bit of a workaholic (as all my uni friends will attest to!) but I prefer to think of it as drive and genuine interest in the course I'm studying.
I consider humanities, be it Classics or Politics, the ideal tutorial subjects because often they require the student to think beyond what is merely presented to them in a textbook, they require discussion, debate; often in humanities subjects there may not even be an objectively "right" answer. Tutorials, more often than classroom teaching, allow for this because they are personal and so foster an environment where a tutee can really penetrate into the roots of his or her subject which leads to greater appreciation of and success in the subject. This is the crux of why I enjoy tutoring humanities: even under the strictures of an exam curriculum they manage to encourage reflection and independent thought like no other family of subjects.
Patience and gentle guidance are key in my tutorials as it helps tutees grow in confidence with the subject. Equally, my lessons are always clearly structured and planned in advance so that after each lesson tutees can feel that they are making real progress. Finally, I understand value for money is important in private tuition so I always aim both to make my teachings directly relevant to the syllabus the tutee is studying, be it 11+ or A2, and ensure each lesson is as full and as challenging as possible in order to meet the needs and aims of parents and pupils
Availability: For this summer until the end of september
I am avaliable any time during a weekday before 7pm.
During the weekends I am avaliable any time before 5pm.

Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: When I was at St. James I set up a Classics project at a local primary school, The Vineyard, where myself and two others taught Latin weekly to a class of ten year olds. We used as our textbook in class the 'Minimus Workbook' but the curriculum over the year was ours to design and implement. At the end of the term I believe we were very successful indeed: we started with a group of children who knew nothing about Latin language and culture and by the end of the year they knew the basic rudiments of grammar and had a solid understanding of Roman culture. Many of them probably would have passed the Latin Language Foundation Tier GCSE had they sat it.
Also, during Lower Sixth Form I was a prefect tutor with responsibility for giving boys in years 7 to 11 hour long after school help sessions in history and when in Upper Sixth I mentored boys who were doing AS philosophy and/or politics and even taught some parts of their lessons.
