I am an enthusiastic teacher of ICT and Business and completed my PGCE at Edge Hill University in 2010 before going travelling. I am now looking for a full time position, which is challenging and will allow me to develop into an outstanding teacher.
During my PGCE I carried out placements at St Aelreds High School in Newton-le-willows and at Maghull High School in Maghull. Both were mixed comprehensive high schools, where I taught KS3, KS4 and KS5. All the classes that I taught where mixed ability classes which allowed me to demonstrate my ability to plan for Gifted and Talented and SEN pupils.
The strong emphasis on pastoral care at my first placement highlighted the need for a holistic approach to education encompassing both religious and cultural beliefs. Within this climate of mutual respect maximum opportunities are enabled for learning and teaching to take place. Both students and teachers feel supported to develop their full potential and achievement at all levels is high.
Through working with a range of KS3/4 mixed ability groups, I have built a strong rapport with students that has helped to motivate them to enjoy ICT and the work carried out. I feel that my enthusiasm and knowledge for ICT has inspired pupils into realising their potential in ICT, and overall raised their attainment and self-esteem in the process.
Throughout my placements I have utilized my strong ICT skills, in particular, through the resources that I produced for the interactive whiteboard ensuring the content keeps the pupils engaged. Subject leaders really valued these resources which where kept by the schools to be used in the future. This is an example of how I endeavour to make all my lessons interactive, stimulating and well paced.
Observations of my lessons have been carried out on a regular basis and I have always received ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ comments for every lesson observed. Particular strengths have been identified including inclusive learning, target setting, good lesson planning, exciting ‘warm ups’ for objective led lessons, rapport with students, differentiated outcomes, and innovative assessment for learning.
I am naturally a creative person and strive to apply creative thinking throughout my lessons. When teaching ‘databases’ to year 9 students, for example, I delivered the lesson objectives through a short quiz on the interactive whiteboard entitled ‘roux or false’. Comments from fellow staff were entirely positive, complimenting my originality and the enjoyment both they and the students had. I developed my Assessment for Learning strategies with students, with a focus on both peer and self-assessments, in order to raise attainment and self-esteem. I also encouraged students to use their own creative skills by acting out short role plays where they owned a shop. To positively reinforce achievement, students were encouraged to praise their peers and to ask insightful questions.
In addition to ICT I have excellent knowledge of Business which I have developed through my university studies and supported by previous experiences in the industry. My Business degree covered a range of subjects from marketing and accounting to global strategy and enterprise. During my time teaching I have developed my knowledge of the Business syllabus in all key stages and have found it very enjoyable teaching the subject in lessons and Young Enterprise sessions.
My love of travel has taken me across Asia where I enhanced my interpersonal and communication skills and developed an ability to communicate with people from a range of cultures and a capacity to deal with any challenge. I am able to use these first hand experiences to enrich my teaching, bringing more creativity into my lessons.
It is my firm belief that it is vital to encourage pupil’s independent learning and thinking skills in order to equip them with the skills to learn for themselves. I believe ICT is an excellent vehicle to develop learning and teaching resources based on Key Skills and thinking skills in particular. I would like to continue to develop this ideology, as I believe it would further raise standards in ICT and the School as a whole. I feel that ICT and Business as subjects provides unique opportunities for pupils to develop transferable skills for their future development and employability.
One of my main attributes is my passion for creativity with that enthusiasm feeding back into the classroom and encouraging the pupils to push their ideas taking risks with their work to raise their confidence levels and ownership over their own learning. I strive to encourage pupils in extracurricular activities in order for all individuals to put their creative minds and skills to use. This would give all learners the opportunity to excel and develop their knowledge in ICT and Business.
I aim, throughout my teaching, to create a safe and purposeful learning environment where pupils are able to develop their understanding. I have high expectations of my students and provide the necessary support to ensure they succeed. I recognize the importance of setting achievable targets to motivate, inspire and reward within a climate of mutual respect.
As a positive role model, I feel that I inspire trust and confidence, demonstrate high levels of courtesy, respect and self-discipline. I am consistent and positive in my approach with students and staff, following school policies and procedures to maintain good order and discipline.
