Laura

I am a published academic author with nineteen years experience of teaching university students at different levels, including those undertaking foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. I also have extensive experience of teaching via distance learning (by both telephone and online). I have an MA in Social Research and BA hons degree and PhD in Social Policy. I have significant experience of conducting academic research, writing and editing publications and proof-reading a wide variety of different sources.

My tutoring approach is supportive, friendly, practical and student-centred. I have taught in a variety of styles and formats to suit the varying needs of students from different backgrounds, cultures and with different access requirements. I therefore understand the need to be flexible, to tailor teaching styles and methods to each student and to allow students to identify the most appropriate approaches to learning for them. I have found that this approach to learning has not only helped my previous students to build confidence in their skills and knowledge, but it has also led to greater success in their academic achievements.

Availability: I am currently available on weekday evenings and Saturdays, but I also have some weekday mornings and afternoons available too. Please ask for further information.

Experience: I have worked as a lecturer, online tutor, private tutor and researcher over the past thirteen years. These roles have involved the delivery of lectures, seminars and tutorials, as well as the marking of essays, exams, dissertations and PhD theses. I have also developed a range of teaching materials for a variety of different subjects within the field of social sciences. This included the design and delivery of a core Study Skills module, which has allowed me to develop a wide range of study skills resources and materials for my students.

I have experience of teaching students studying for degrees, MAs and PhDs in a range of areas, including:

I taught for eight years on an online MA course in Disability Studies, which gave me a greater understanding of the needs of students learning at a distance, and the ways to develop active approaches to learning online. I have also supervised both undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations in various subjects.
