Information about James

I am a Cambridge University graduate and a full-time, professional tutor with a friendly approach to tutoring, placing emphasis on confidence-building as well as knowledge attainment.

I teach mathematics and physics up to A-level standard and first and second year university mathematics.

I also offer specialised tuition for the 11+ and 13+ entrance exams to private schools (all subjects including English).

My tutoring philosophy relies strongly on the building of rapport between student and tutor as well as the Socratic Method, whereby I lead students to attaining knowledge themselves by asking precise, incremental questions rather than simply feeding it to them as facts to be learnt.

My approach to tutoring is friendly and informal. I prefer to let the tutee dictate the pace of a session by encouraging them to interrupt or ask me to repeat myself when we hit upon work they are not fully understanding.

I have found that the most efficient use of a tutoring session is for me to first outline the theory of what we are going to study in that session before using the remainder of the time to work through questions together. They will become progressively more comfortable with the content until, ultimately, they feel able to answer the questions alone.

The content of the sessions is always tailored to the particular qualification the student is working towards.

Availability: I am available at all times during the week and, depending on circumstances, at the weekend.

IMPORTANT:

I require 48 hours notice in order to cancel a lesson otherwise you are liable for the full cost of the lesson. Failure to attend will also result in full liability.

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: For more than five years I have worked full-time as an academic tutor, mostly in London. I have worked both in schools and privately, as well as for tuition agencies including Keystone Tutors, Greater London Education and Holland Park Tuition in London, and Fleet Tutors elsewhere. I have helped upwards of a hundred students from both comprehensive school backgrounds and those attending the elite public schools such as Eton and Harrow to achieve their goals. Recently I have taken `super tutor` positions where I travel the world with a family providing support for their children in all subjects).

Most of this work has been preparation for a particular exam, although I have also had students who are studying just for the enjoyment of it. I feel well-suited to being `on the other end` of the one-to-one style of teaching that I benefited from at university.

I can offer either `long-term` tutoring, where I see a student regularly, for an hour or so a week to help them keep up with their course, or `intensive` tutoring, where I see the student many times a week for a short time. Many of my former students have found this latter approach extremely useful as preparation for GCSE or A-Level exams.

I also have significant experience with the 11+ and 13+ entrance exams to private schools, and have traveled the world on residential positions preparing foreign students to enter the elite British schools.

Great tutor. Very knowledgeable, patient and, my son says, "cool"! James is also flexible - he does both physics and maths with my son. I highly recommend him.

Jamie`s friendly and targeted lessons helped to focus my sons learning. He went from a poor base of understanding and became a strong student who enjoyed the subject. Thank you Jamie
