Information about Elaine

I am patient and encouraging and enjoy seeing my students succeed. I believe that helping my students to gain self-confidence is my most important role. Thus I enjoy helping students with mild dyslexia (though I am not a specialist) and students who have previously found English either hard going or downright boring!

I CURRENTLY DO ALL OF MY TUTORING ON SKYPE and my students have been very happy with this. We SHARE SCREENS so that we can look at the same document or website and discuss it. We use the the SKYPE MESSENGER as a two-way blackboard. However, it is the face-to-face LISTENING to a student`s concerns that allows me to customize lessons for each student.

Availability: Negotiable - but teaching on Skype means that times are very flexible.

I AM CURRENTLY ONLY ACCEPTING STUDENTS AT UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE LEVELS.

Willing to travel: 1 miles

Experience: As PRIVATE TUTOR, I have taught a variety of subjects - and I have the ability to diversify further. Thus, in addition to teaching GCSE LANGUAGE and LITERATURE for practically all the exam boards, I have taught A LEVEL LANGUAGE and LITERATURE, GCSE RELIGIOUS STUDIES and AS Level PHILOSOPHY and ETHICS

I was a UNIVERSITY LECTURER in ENGLISH for fifteen years (teaching "Freshers" to Masters Level) and I have a real passion for ENGLISH LITERATURE. However, I have a lot of experience of teaching essay-writing skills to young and young-at-heart adults across a wide range of career-stages, abilities and subjects. My Masters degree is in EASTERN RELIGIONS so I am aware of the essay-writing requirements for subjects other than "pure" English. Hence I have also taught and have helped undergraduates with dissertations in Buddhism, Marketing and Anthropology! [Updated May 2021] I have subsequently coached several students in the writing up stages of their PhD theses.

Outside of the usual exam syllabuses, I have successfully coached two students for the `orrible DfE LITERACY SKILLS TEST. I have also taught business report-writing skills to business-people and job-application writing and INTERVIEW SKILLS. I currently teach English as a Foreign Language [EFL] and edit policy documents / academic articles for non-native English speakers abroad.
