Information about Stephen L

I am a full-time Science tutor and have a First class degree in Pharmacology from Kings College London and a PhD from the University of Oxford. My general curiosity in Biology and nature has always helped motivate me in my studies and I hope that through tutoring I can inspire and transfer my enthusiasm for science to my students.

Due to the nature of my educational background, I have an excellent understanding of the Science subjects and I am adept in explaining complex concepts and ideas in a more understandable and manageable way.

I am a friendly, patient and enthusiastic science tutor who has over 8 years of experience in tutoring, mentoring and teaching science to those from the ages of 11 to PhD level.

Tutoring Approach:

I provide a personalised tuition programme either online or in the tutee`s home and can also provide home schooling/ education during the day.

The tuition sessions are very structured and tailored to the needs and learning style of the student, focusing on any weaknesses. These needs are usually pinpointed within the first meeting and I tailor all sessions to the individual specific exam board.

I apply a variety of different teaching techniques and styles that I have found to be effective in order to make studying enjoyable, interesting as well as beneficial, helping students to reach and excel to their full potential.

My strategy in teaching addresses multiple areas to greatly benefit student`s approach to learning which helps build their confidence. These include:
- Help students to actually understand concepts and topics (rather than simply memorising facts)
- Support with exam techniques, specific exam terminology and definitions that are commonly asked
- Extensive exposure to actual exam board specific questions (I have an extensive array of relevant up-to-date educational and past exam papers, split by topic, for all subjects)
- Provide support with revision techniques and advice to self learn and self motivate
- Assist with composing an effective weekly study schedule tailored and based around the student`s extra-curricular activities
- Provide comprehensive feedback after each lesson on student`s progress, homework results and areas to improve

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me

Dr Stephen is a first-class tutor and has been a godsend for our son. After achieving very poor exam grades for his year 10 school triple science exams, our son had almost given up in the sciences. We then found the amazing Dr Stephen and feel very blessed to have found a reliable, honest and genuinely caring tutor to support our son. He has been tutoring our son for the past few months and our son’s interest and confidence has remarkably grown, so much so our son feels confident that he will achieve three grade 9s for his Science GCSE next year. The lessons are online for 2 hours and as the lessons are very engaging, my son remains focused and enjoys his lessons. Dr Stephen’s knowledge of his subject and exam technique is second to none. His approach to explaining Science concepts to our son is excellent and he will adjust his teaching style to how fast our son grasps each subject. He always provides thorough feedback after each lesson and provides exam homework to encourage learning outside the tuition lessons. Dr Stephen is extremely thorough and well prepared and has helped our son prepare all the groundwork. We cannot thank Dr Stephen enough for his time and dedication – it is very much appreciated.

Stephen has been my tutor for about six months or more, and I can honestly say that he is a better science teacher than the ones i have in my school.

He teaches using power points (that he makes himself). I find his power points easy to learn and take notes from, because you can easily distinguish the important key words when writing your notes. Stephen is always willing to explain a topic as many times as it takes for you to understand and goes through topics in an order that makes the work more understandable and that is different from my school. We always start the lessons with a recap and end with an enjoyable quiz based on what we`ve learnt. At the end of every lesson I`m given an exam based homework to complete for homework, then in our next lesson we go through my mistakes, and i`m given tips on how to improve to pick up extra marks.

Stephen has recently helped me with my revision timetable for Easter, we set up a 9am-5pm schedule ensuring 10 minute breaks between each 50 minute slot and 45 minutes breaks between every 4 slots. At first i was quite intimidated by this schedule, but after a motivational conversation with Stephen, I felt ready to take on the task.

Stephen expects A*`s from all his tutees, because he knows they have the potential to do well if they listen to his advice.

Stephen provided intensive assistance to our son ahead of his GCSEs in the three sciences. We were highly impressed with his organisation and detailed knowledge of each exam board sylabus which enabled him to ensure he covered each topic effectively ahead of the exams. Tommaso benefitted hugely from Stephen``s assistance and we would certainly highly recommend him.

Outstanding! From the first moment he started explaining his method and discussed my son`s needs, his experience and passion started flowing out. My son was also very excited about his first lesson and looking forward to the next one.

Clearly knows what he is talking about and has a high work ethic. He is very honest about my chances and how I might try to improve.

His methods definitely make a difference - not only in revising for exams but in my approach to my career. It helps that he has a concrete belief in the style he teaches and genuinely wants his students to do well and not just pass.

I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him about career prospects towards the end of the session and his enthusiasm for his own subject is obvious.

Overall, a great tutor and one that I couldn`t possibly recommend more.

Stephen has been tutoring my son for 2 months in Biology, Physics and Chemistry in preparation for his IGCSEs this summer. He is extremely passionate about his subjects and very keen to impart his knowledge and enthusiasm for science to his students. Stephen has worked very patiently and diligently with my son using teaching tools/methods that suit his learning style and to which he has positively responded. I would not hesitate to recommend Stephen: he is not only very professional, but he has a warm and friendly personality.
