My approach: I prefer to explain to students why you tackle problems a certain way, rather than getting them to just memorise a method. This helps them to apply it to a range of situations. I try to relate concepts to the real world to make them easier to grasp. I emphasise the importance of mental maths, including times tables and number bonds, showing your working out and learning from any mistakes. I believe in repetition and building up confidence. When taught the right way, with patience and thorough explanations, many pupils realise that Maths is really very doable and can be enjoyable.

About me: I have a first class degree in Mathematics from the University of Surrey which I achieved as a mature student at the age of 39 some 10 years ago, so it is all quite fresh. I qualified as a teacher while working at St Peter`s school in Guildford. I came to realise that it is more rewarding to tutor on a one-to-one basis than to control 30 teenagers in a class, so I returned to work in financial services as my main job and I continued tutoring at weekends.

My rate is £30 per hour and I cover pupils from age 12 upwards. First lesson is half price so you can decide if my style will work for you.
