Information about Nicholas

I have over ten years experience tutoring students of all abilities. I have helped many students make real breakthroughs and I have a natural ability to empathise and engage with the people I teach.

My students tell me I make things understandable by relating them to the real world and nearly everyone I`ve taught has told me I helped them finally turn the corner with their studies.

Getting through to students is something I`m very passionate about and as a good communicator I can make science accessible to anyone, and I never fail to capture the interest of even the most disengaged students.

The students I have worked with long-term have far outperformed their predicted grades and I also rigorously teach students how to work effectively meaning they learn the skills they need to succeed in all their studies.

In recent years I have achieved great personal academic success and, by the time I left university, half of my year studying engineering were relying on me to better explain to them some of the things we were learning.

I attained a first class master`s degree in Medical Engineering (MEng) at Queen Mary, receiving an academic award and the highest grade in my year (82%) for my third year dissertation, and the same again for my final year group project. I achieved a first in each of my four years of study, performing particularly well in exams.

Since then I have completes a PhD in neuroscience at UCL. In my second year I won first place in a competition for UCL neuroscience PhD students to present their projects, underlining my ability to effectively relate complicated information to a wide variety of audiences.

My boss has relied on me to teach each new employee he hires what they need to know. I have a passion for good communication of ideas and have won awards for my report writing, the posters I`ve made, and talks that I`ve given explaining my work. Everyone I have taught in my professional life so far has said I am a great teacher and I hugely enjoy helping people to better understand things.

My ability at teaching people well stems from being able to put myself in my student’s shoes and addressing the fundamental reasons why they don`t yet understand - often by discussing more basic concepts or simply using more practical examples to explain things.

Outside of work I love to socialise, travel as much as I can, and read extensively about world affairs and history. I play sport and love music. I consider myself well rounded outside of my very technical job!

I am starting a job in Japan in May and so will be taking on new students for the next few months.

Availability: I am available evenings after 17.00 but can do during the day as well if necessary. Weekends I am available any time.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring people one-on-one for over a decade. At school I ran informal `classes` before exams where I taught all my friends how to pass and they credited me with helping them improve their grades. At university I taught almost everyone in my year. Groups would form around me as I explained things to people and all my close friends ended with first class degrees. Every important group project I was involved in got the highest grades in the year. At work I teach each new member of our group, often giving them crash courses in basic physics and maths.
