Information about Des

Proofreading and tutoring. Sociology.

I am an experienced undergraduate, and A-level tutor having taught in the sociology department at the University of Warwick for four years and also for a short while in the School of Languages and Social Sciences at the University of Aston. (I can also tutor at this level in modern history, politics and international relations). I have BA in sociology and politics from Oxford Brookes University and an MSc in social science research methods from Sussex. I also have a doctorate in sociology from the University of Warwick. In the past I have tutored for a private agency (where I held an advanced CRB certificate) at A-level in sociology, politics and modern history. My advantage, as an independent tutor, is that I am able to create a comfortable environment for students away from the pressures of school, college, and sixth form.

For undergraduates, I can offer advice on essay and dissertation construction and also on writing style and format. Additionally, I can help to formulate ideas for research projects and can proofread long or short drafts. The weekly fee starts at £50.

At A-level I am happy to tutor A2 students who are approaching their final exams and similarly, As students: payment for this work is charged in advance as this is a significant commitment for both parties. The fee is £50 per week. However, I offer a reduction for advance block bookings of ten weeks or more.

Availability: I am available at most times and with short notice with reasonable notice given and, if individual teaching requirements are discussed prior to tuition. Tuition is charged at 50 pounds per hourly session, depending on: the subject and the complexity of the teaching required (added preparation time) and travel expenses (petrol and train fares etc).
I now operate a cancellation policy: I ask for 48 hours notice of cancellation of tutoring sessions, otherwise the fee for the session will be required in advance of resumption of teaching. If sessions have been paid for in advance the missed session will be void.

Please note: I do not give refunds for those clients who have block bookings at reduced rates; the reduction is given on the basis that the sessions will be completed; if the client no longer wishes to continue the advance fee is forefeited.

Willing to travel: 50 miles

Experience: I have successfully tutored students to `double` AAB in their A-level exams, and thus their desired university, and I have helped undergraduates to achieve first class degrees.

As a mature student I entered higher education having sat the old A-level and the new As A2 format course exam. I have tutored students in the As A2 exams since 2009. Additionally, as someone who`s taught in the University, I am able to guide students in their application choices and prepare them for higher education studies.

Dr. Des is very professional tutor and I do recommend lessons with him. He prepares the classes, adapting to the knowledge and progress required by the student at all times. Moreover he usually gives detailed materials and instructions to be prepared to the lessons. We do appreciate his knowledge and empathy with the student.

Des first tutored me in history for my AQA Modern British History A-level, which has helped me secure a comfortable “A” grade. He later advised me on research techniques and proof-read my theology essays throughout my BA, which also resulted in consistent 1:1 marks and showed Des has an excellent understanding and contextual knowledge of human sciences that are on the more general side of sociology, as well as specific knowledge of analytic philosophy, which came in very handy for my degree... Des has offered very helpful advice on reading material relating to my dissertation, including a broad range of works on postmodernism which hadn’t been suggested at Durham University. Through proof-reading and editing my extra-curricular work and offering comments on non-fiction essays and short fiction, Des has helped me secure over thirteen paid professional publications in three years.

Tutors Response :

Not what I wanted to focus on. The lessons often drifted to other unnecessary information other than the spec of my A Level Sociology!
However, Des does have a lot of information on a degree basis. So if anyone is studying sociology as a degree, definitely go to Des!!! :)

Tutors Response :

This student ended the sessisons before we had completed half of the booked sessions as I had a family bereavement on the basis that I could not provide the structure she needed (and after missing one session herself without giving adequate notice for similar reasons), and seemed unaware of how tutoring works - I have been tutoring successfully at A-level since 2008 and have helped a number of students take up their places at university. The sessions were in fact all prepped for and arranged around the AQA exam questions which this student had little knowledge of how to answer hence the expansive background - sociology is theory based and without understanding that you can`t get the context and read the codifications in the exam questions - hence my background on Foucault which this student simply didn`t want to engage with.
