Information about Simon

I am a qualified secondary teacher with a degree in History and Law and PGCE (UC Swansea). Main method subjects are History and English. Have also taught, Social Policy, Sociology, Social Care and Childhood Studies at FE level. Currently a semi-retired social worker with 35 years Local Authority experience in work with children and families. Married to a Primary teacher and have 2 adult children.
I have read and traveled widely and have keen interests in football, tennis, politics, history, current affairs and music.

I recognise that many students will be motivated by a desire for those all important grades but it is equally important to me to develop understanding and interest in the subject as fully as possible. I will not seek to just deliver "lessons" but to engage with the student at their own level and help them access the learning style and methods that will most enhance their chances of success.
One to one support with essay writing and exam technique are a priority for most students so I provide detailed comment and feedback when reviewing and discussing your work. Email and phone support is also available between tutor sessions.

I offer an initial meeting with any prospective student (and parents) for an informal consultation. This is free of charge with no commitment to continue unless you decide to do so. The standard rate is £35 per hour (£40 at your home) but this may vary depending on the level of support and contact needed between sessions. I may also make an additional charge for travel time/costs if you are outside my immediate locality. Please ask if you have any questions about this.

Availability: Daytimes and evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Weds preferred. Other evening and weekend sessions may be possible but not always be at the same time each week due to other commitments.

NB: I currently have a high volume of enquiries for tutoring - more than I have availability for. I will respond to all enquiries but I am prioritising students seeking GCSE and A level tutoring in History and/or English Literature.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: Part-time tutoring and lecturing in FE College. Adult education history classes. Training and group-work with young people, foster carers and social workers. Informal education support to own 2 children through to graduate level.

Simon has been great for my son. He helped him in GCSE English lit and lang as well as history. Simon was great at giving feedback on work he set and really got my son engaged in the learning. He managed to get my son from someone who struggled to know how to start writing an essay to a confident writer. Would highly recommend Simon.

Simon became involved with tutoring my son for GCSE English after he had a couple of issues with previous English Tutors. Simon very quickly managed to pinpoint his weak areas, and importantly gave him confidence. Within a short period of time there was a noticeable improvement regarding my son’s school exam results. Simon is very patient and very positive in the way he teaches. After every lesson he provides feedback via email both to the student and parent, I found this to be very useful. In my experience I have found that most other tutors do not tend to offer this feedback unless asked. Needless to say I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Simon, and we were very lucky to have found him.

Our son achieved Grade D in his English Language GCSE and Simon reacted quickly to the situation ready for the resit which was only 3 months later.
Simon quickly identified the areas of weakness and worked calmly to get our son ready for the resit. I am pleased to say our son successfully passed the resit.

Tutors Response :

Thanks for your comments. Sam was an absolute pleasure to teach and deserves every success with A levels.

Thanks Simon you have made a real difference in a short space of time. My daughter looks forward to the sessions and you ensure she has a complete understanding of the topics being covered in school which is reflected in much improved test results but perhaps more importantly her confidence. No hesitation in a 5* recommendation.

I had Simon as a tutor from October to May this year in preparation for my History A- Level resit. The quality of his teaching was excellent as he helped me to cover all of the course`s content quickly and efficiently, providing resources such as books and links to relavent websites, films and documentaries. He also helped me to memorise all of the content through regular pop quizzes and to improve my exam technique through practice essays, the feedback from which was incredibly helpful. As a result of Simon`s teaching I was able to bring up my grade for this particular exam from a U to an A and I could not be happier.

Tutors Response :

Thank you Ian. I was delighted to hear this result and you fully deserved it. You worked hard to build key skills in interpreting questions and writing well focused answers - not just to get the grade but from a growing interest and desire to understand the subject (which is just as important to me).

Simon is tutoring my son for AS Level English Literature. I`ve been really pleased that we chose him, and my son has found the tutorials extremely interesting and useful. Simon has put a great deal of effort and intelligence into understanding the exam requirements and finding the right way to support my son`s learning.

Tutors Response :

Thanks for the generous comments! Will is a pleasure to work with and has enthusiasm, good ideas and great potential. We are working to ensure he can develop and express this in his writing and exam technique.

My son had to do an English language resit GCSE at short notice so we only had about a month of tuition from Simon but we were glad we found him as he was very helpful and accommodating and has given my son a lot of confidence to face the resit. He looked at past school work my son had completed and tailored his sessions around the areas he needed most help in.I would definitely recommend Simon.

Tutors Response :

Thanks for your generous comments. Great to hear that Robert improved his grade and my best wishes for his 6th form studies!

We really hit the jackpot finding Simon on the web site. From the first meeting my son and I felt really comfortable with Simon`s professional attitude towards the task at hand for the coming year.
He sets a relaxed environment when tutoring which helps my son feel that he is not under too much pressure, and he sets quizzes on the subjects covered which helps keeping it fun.
Simon really impressed me in the way he had a clear direction on the way he was going to go in covering History, Law and English from day one.
Just by talking to Simon you can tell he is competent and knowledgeable in the subjects he is delivering.
After each session Simon sends a email on what was covered and the objectives for the following session. As a parent this is extra bonus as this helps me keep tracks on what`s being taught by SImon, because at times my teenage son is a bit slow answering me when I ask what was covered (teenagers).
My Wife and I wished we had found Simon a year earlier as its not easy finding a tutor that our Son would feel at ease with.

We have been fortunate enough to hire Simon as a tutor for our son while he has been studying for an AS Level in History this year as an independent student prior to entry at university next year. Simon has worked in tandem with an online tutor who has provided and delivered the bulk of the lectures to our son. This has meant a certain amount of mutual communication between tutors and ourselves and Simon has had to support lessons delivered by the online tutor. Simon has established from the start an engaged, supportive and collaborative working relationship with our son. He always sent a follow up email following every lesson to communicate what was covered and a reminder of work to be completed. He has lent books and extra resources to our son to assist him and has suggested website links, museums, films and other ideas designed to provide further stimulation. Simon has been flexible with his lessons given that our son was an independent learner and has been punctual and professional in all aspects of the teaching experience. The greatest compliment is that our son has greatly enjoyed all his lessons with Simon and his knowledge and enjoyment of history has greatly increased. We recommend Simon highly as a tutor.

Tutors Response :

Many thanks for your generous comments. It was good to hear of Matt`s success in the exams. He has kept in touch with a few questions since starting his undergraduate History course and is clearly enjoying student life!
