Information about Nick
I have been a tutor since September 2014, after 23 years as an army officer and then 15 years managing a firm of solicitors in London, I became a freelance PRINCE2 Project Manager for 7 years. I retired in 2014 and tutoring gives me mental stimulus and great reward from inspiring young people,
Although I was never a qualified teacher; for 20 years I coached army officers for promotion and the Staff College entrance exams. They require exam candidates to show very clear thinking and lucid writing.
I have 2 degrees; my primary is a BA Hons 2:1 in English Language & Literature from Durham University (1976); my secondary is my subsidiary, History (Pass Degree), again from Durham University in 1975.
I am also a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and of the Staff College Camberley (the Tri Services` "MBA programme run by Cranfield University, a residential 18 month programme for officers selected for higher command).
I am a PRINCE 2 Practitioner project manager.
I have really enjoyed tutoring for the last 4 years as a post-retirement hobby ; and we have had good results: C grades improved to As; Ds to B/C; severely dyslexic and ADHD pupils actually reading books and passing GCSE.
If you are still interested in me, get in touch on the Tutorhunt message service to explore your needs and my fit to them; then we should meet to see how we all get on and if I can inspire your child.
For English I am especially interested in:
Shakespeare and the Jacobean dramas
17th Century Comedies
Dickens
The Edwardian Novel
20th century literature,
t
Poets of the Great War and later conflicts
20th Century and TV drama,
poetry: The metaphysicals; John Donne, John Clare Hardy.
For History, I enjoy:
The 20th century, especially the 2 World Wars, Germany, Russia, America,
the Cold War, (I fought in it!)
Cuba & Korea,
Vietnam
Civil rights in the USA and the year of protest 1968.
I also cover the early years of the English nation: King Alfred, Normans etc
English Civil war
Glorious Revolution
Victorians
Creation of Empire and withdrawal from the same
I have detailed experience of tutoring academic students with severe dyslexia and Attention Deficit High Dependency.
I also coach candidates to get into The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst by passing the 3 day Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB). I am familiar with the academic and practical tests, command tasks, attitudes and standards required, as I was President of the Royal Artillery`s pre-board in the 1990s. I coach:
essay writing,
the lecturette,
military and current affairs knowledge,
the written planning exercise,
interview preparation
general conduct throughout the selection board.
Whatever the subject, I offer a free initial meeting for us to get to know each other, discuss your needs and the selected syllabus. Then I leave you to decide if you want to engage me!
I am DBS checked and I tutor at your home.
I only see 1 pupil per evening starting after school between 4-6 pm (I like to finish by 7 pm); or we are both too tired to get the best benefit of an intensive hour session.
Good luck in your search!
Availability: WEEKDAY EVENINGS 4-6PM Monday START Monday - Thursday.
I retain weekends for catch ups or emergency sessions!
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I now have 4 years experience of tutoring students for GCSE, A Level and even undergraduate studies; including those with severe dyslexia and ADHD.
I have raised predicted grades for students of English GCSE from an E to a C and for History from predicted C to an A
I have coached 4 young men for the Army Officer Selection Board to enter Sandhurst for officer training. I had previously run the AOSB Briefings for 3 years when I was a serving officer.
I have also coached adults in management and Project Management who are seeking professional and PM or PRINCE2 qualifications; using my MBA and Project management experience as a PRINCE2 Practitioner.

Nick is incredibly helpful. Thanks to his tutorship, I have improved my Planning Exercises, and I`m feeling more confident about my abilities. He gives constructive advice, and also modifies his sessions based your well-being, and does not charge the full rate, if you want to call a session shorter than one hour. Would highly recommend his services.

Good and helpful way to prepare for the intellectual demands of AOSB Main Board. Through the help of Nick I massively improved my PlanEX performance at MB, which I found very hard initially with time constraints. Also significantly prepared me in verbally presenting PlanEx under pressure, which trips many people up at MB, when under intense questioning. You can also receive useful advise and feedback on your essay writing, lecturettes and army knowledge.
Tutors Response :
Thank you very much Matt and good luck

Yet to attend a session as Mainboard is slightly delayed, however as soon as I purchased his details through TH I instantly received an abundance of valuable information regarding AOSB. Looking forward to booking a session in October.

I`m an ex-serviceman aiming for an Access to University course to become a properly trained therapist. I need to pass IGCSE English Language and a science to get onto the access course.
I didn`t get any GCSEs at school so Nick has worked with me to assess the areas where I need to improve. Hes gone from explaining the basics of grammar, sentences, punctuation and spelling, to setting me past papers and writing exercises, to practice my language techniques for the exam.
He has explained things clearly and at the pace that suits me. Hes been especially good on how the exam questions differ in what you have to show in each answer. He`s also got me reading to improve my vocab and writing style
I`ve become more confident in my writing and his detailed feedback is building on that filling in a lot of gaps from my school days. I`m feeling very much more positive about getting in to uni and coping with studying there thanks to Nick`s help
Tutors Response :
Thanks Chris that`s really helpful. You have it in you it just needs practice

Nick is a very enthusiastic, experienced knowledgeable tutor.
My daughter really enjoys her tutor sessions, which are at our home, she gets so much out of them and is very pleased and comfortable with Nick. He is very good at explaining things, patient and really helps with understanding. Just after a few sessions My daughter has said her English literature knowledge has already improved and understands her school work so much more already.
I would really recommend Nick as an English tutor.

My son has only had a couple of sessions so far with Nick but already we are impressed. Nick is very professional, knowledgeable, friendly and encouraging and is building up rapport with my under-confident son. He is also flexible in his hours and goes over and above to ensure that my son feels able to achieve. I would definitely recommend him as an English tutor.

Nick Mercer has been tutoring English to my son, who sits his GCSE`s in 2017, for three months. He always provides details of preparation before each session and useful feedback after which ensures we make good use of time. His enthusiasm is enormous and I know this inspires my son who has reacted very well. Nick`s organisation, time-keeping and all round professionalism are exceptional. I have no hesitation in recommending him.

We did not eventually go ahead with tuition from Nick as my son managed to get help elsewhere. However, Nick was most gracious and helpful in giving my son some support through e-mail and refused payment. Based on this experience, we would not hesitate to recommend him highly for his considerate manner and professionalism.
