Information about Andrew

I`m an approachable and engaging teacher, committed to student-centred learning and fostering an excellent relationship between tutor and tutee. Please see the testimonials in my experience section by way of illustration.

I`m passionate about literature and history, particularly from the nineteenth century to date. I`ve particular expertise on the early twentieth century and the First World War, but have also taught widely across periods.

I’m looking primarily for students of Literature and History at A-level and university level who would like extra tutoring. However, I’m happy to consider areas close to these (GCSE literature or history, early C20th sociology or politics dependent on material).

I’m based in Sutton Bonington (near Kegworth). To give you an idea of my radius, I can easily get to the following: Clifton, East Leake, Wymeswold, Loughborough, Shepshed, Castle Donington, Shardlow, Long Eaton. Prepared to consider other parts of Nottingham or Derby if booking a substantial series of lessons.

I`m also prepared to consider a skill swap in return for piano lessons.

Availability: Weekdays apart from Thursday pm.
Weekends only by arrangement and will attract a higher hourly rate.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I’ve ten years experience of teaching at university level, and have written for national newspapers and magazines, published several academic articles, and have a forthcoming monograph on the cultural history of the First World War. The early twentieth century area is my main focus, but I have taught introductory historical, theoretical and literary courses, period survey courses and specialist courses.

I’ve worked at a number of different institutions, from the Russell Group to new universities, and so have dealt with students from a wide variety of backgrounds. I’ve also previously tutored A-level English Literature through an agency. I’ve taught successfully at all those levels, and students have consistently praised my approachability and quality of feedback. Here are a few testimonials:

“His dedication to researching above and beyond the subject area, so that he always has a vast range of interesting and useful resources to refer to in order to aid our study is both effective and inspiring. [...] Not only does he go out of his way to aid students, but he is very supportive in his feedback- encouraging and reassuring those who are struggling. he also uses this information/ feedback from students to inform his lessons, adapting his plans to revisit areas that people are struggling with, or providing further resources or information on concepts that are unclear or particularly difficult in response to student concerns. Andrew is enthusiastic, inspirational in both knowledge and approach, and always working for the better learning experience of the student.”

“He has been amazing in terms of answering questions and prompting different lines of research as well as being encouraging of individual ideas. [...] Feedback incredibly helpful and directive in terms of research and streamlining essay argument.”

“His communication is fantastic and has helped me significantly during the second term of my course, helping me to balance my work load and gain marks I didn`t think I could achieve. Andrew should be recognised for his efforts he has placed into the course and his class, but also for his efforts he has put into the individual, pushing each of us to develop, as he sees each of us with so much potential.”
