Learning should be enjoyable as well as enabling and confidence building. As a highly experienced teacher with over 24 years experience, and 5 years as a GCSE examiner, I believe that success is always possible when there is a desire to learn, not just a requirement to do so!

I craft lessons on a bespoke basis for each learner and specialise in exam technique, treating exams as opportunities to show case understanding and talent, rather than ordeals involving stress and sleepless nights! Technique is key here, and once that is mastered, so many other aspects fall in to place naturally.

With my MA in Creative Writing (Distinction) gained in 2017 I am also up to date with new approaches and strategies with regard to writing and current practice. I am also a big fan of Critical Skills / Creative Habits of Minds and can tailor a learning approach to suit students on a very individual basis. I love what I do and am only too happy to be able to share my craft and expertise with others!

Having taught in a comprehensive school since 1996 (where I was a Head of Department for 12 years) until 2015 I now run an independent freelance drama and tuition business across the Powys area where learners are also prepared for LAMDA exams. I also taught English and Drama in the classroom two days a week in a comprehensive school in Monmouthshire 2017/2018. In addition to offering tuition up to A level for English Language / Lit / Drama / Theatre Studies I also work as a Creative Practitioner connected to the Lead Creative School Scheme, linked to the Arts Council Wales.

Being an examiner for GCSE English Language and Literature also serves to keep my awareness focussed on exam requirements and exam technique. I am also an examiner with LAMDA.

I feel passionately about effective (and enjoyable!) teaching and do so with focus and creativity - but also that the tutoring delivered needs to be effective, relevant and enjoyable for the tutee. Confidence is a tool to be developed - we are not all born with it naturally. This is another area I quietly focus on during my time spent with tutees. I also prepare learners for LAMDA exams and the results speak for themselves, with a 50 / 50 split between Distinctions and Merits in Speaking in Public / Acting / Verse and Prose being the norm.

Experience: I am a specialist English and Drama teacher of 20 years experience and have only recently left the profession to build up my own tuition and teaching business. Between 1996-2015 I worked in a comprehensive school in S.E Wales where for the last 12 years I was the Head of Drama. I have taught and delivered WJEC GCSE Drama, BTEC Performing Arts, KS4 GCSE English Language and Literature as well as at KS3.

With a degree in Drama (where I also studied English) and a PGCE (English) from UWE I am a highly successful teacher who generates very strong results - as well as nurturing a love and confidence for the subjects I deliver.

Being a GCSE examiner (having just completed my 4th year) keeps me up to date with current syllabi. I am also an examiner with LAMDA.

I am now also a Creative Practitioner and have been placed with with two schools (Newport) who are taking part in the Lead Creative School Scheme, a nation wide project helping to deliver learning across the curriculum on project based work with a creative approach and delivery.

Gaining my MA (Distinction) in 2017 informs my work. I enjoy ongoing study and it helps to keep me up to date with new approaches and pedagogy across my subjects and work.
