Information about Josh

I graduated with a First Class (Hons) in BSc Financial Mathematics from the University of Leicester in 2013 and have since spent time in industry and conducted voluntary work in the Maths department of a local school. I am currently studying for a postgraduate degree in Operational Research and Applied Statistics at Cardiff University. I am passionate about education and have enjoyed much academic success. However, I am also passionate about seeing others fulfil their potential. It is for this reason that I am offering my services as a tutor.

My experience with local schools has given me an understanding of the current challenges facing pupils, particularly in the subject of mathematics. In an area where confidence is sadly lacking, I am committed to using my knowledge, skills and experience to help others feel more comfortable with the subject. I am an amicable and approachable individual and I welcome questions and queries as I see exploration as integral to the learning process.

Availability: Weekday evenings, weekends.

I charge £25 per hour but offer the following package deals for advanced bookings:

Bronze: 5hrs for £115
Silver: 10hrs for £210
Gold: 20hrs for £340

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have long been an enthusiastic representative of the subject of mathematics, eager to encourage others in their study of the discipline. As part of my Communicating Mathematics degree module I gained experience in teaching at a secondary school, designing learning resources and engaging with pedagogical research. My role as Leicester Ambassador also afforded me opportunities to promote mathematics as I served as a classroom assistant at a Maths Masterclass, helped facilitate a Maths in Magic showpiece and assisted local school pupils at an on-campus visit day. In an effort to become more integrated in the mathematical community, I am a registered STEM Ambassador with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network (STEMNET) and an Associate member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA).

I have particular experience with small groups as I carried out a series of workshops with Year 8 pupils during the Communicating Mathematics degree module. I was effective in using this group size to develop not only academic proficiency but the softer skills of communication, team work and problem structuring. I believe the positive feedback I received from both pupils and teachers reflects my ability to teach mathematics in a way that is engaging, stimulating and relevant for the learner.
