After beginning to teach a couple of primary-aged pupils French, Much to my amazement they were not receiving lessons in any language other than English in their primary school? Why??!! Why is it that within a small radius of the West Midlands is there a postcode lottery when it comes to languages? Surely this is unacceptable? Some pupils then are already disadvantaged when they arrive at secondary school when their peers are way ahead of them in learning a language? My view is that it is paramount that `every child matters` isn`t it? All pupils should be allowed the exact same start in life when it comes to learning a language other than their own? There is so much emphasis on literacy and numeracy that the Arts, Languages, Sport etc are being neglected.... but at what cost???
