Unfortunately, this is the situation many university graduates face themselves in today. Gone are the times when getting a degree meant a comfy job for life.
The economy is still in shambles. Prices for everything from food to houses are rising like never before, whilst competition for universities and jobs are at an all-time high. Today, 43% of all UK graduates end university completely unemployed.
However, this does not apply for those who know their Maths
Now, Maths skills, in some shape or form, are required in virtually every part of every business. But for whatever reason, the majority of the UK is terrible when it comes to Maths. This is why society considers good mathematicians as `clever`, where a student equally as talented in History never earns the same accolade.
Like it or not, a good Maths GCSE grade has a certain glow on the CV. It is universally respected, and attracts the best universities and employers alike (even if your course/career is not particularly mathematical). This means those with better Maths grades get more say in where they work - and they also earn more.
A 2013 study, backed by the UK government, found that even a moderate improvement in a child`s Maths skills has a massive impact on what they will later earn. Here`s what it found:
A child who is "good at Maths" goes on to earn 7% more than an "otherwise identical" child at the age of 30.
That 7% is roughly equal to about an extra £2,100 each year - for every year of their working life. Remember that`s just a decent improvement. A great improvement, along with entry into a top university will make their world very comfortable.
If that`s not incentive to get the best Maths GCSE grade possible then I don`t know what is.
