There are many different reasons to take music exams. Some advantages of taking exams are that it can be very motivating as it gives something to work towards and can give a sense of gratification. It is also good to have some kind of proof of standard which can be useful when joining an ensemble. Taking exams encourages the development of aural skills that otherwise may be neglected as most exams contain an aural section. It also encourages students to learn essential technical abilities, for example scales.

Some disadvantages of taking exams can be that there is not always a wide range of pieces to choose from which prevents people being able to play music they are passionate about. Also, learning to play an instrument should be an enjoyable experience; taking exams can add a lot of pressure and take the fun out of playing.

Overall, I believe that it depends on the student whether or not taking exams is neccessary.
