Information about Sam
I am an experienced, meticulous and motivating full-time London tutor. My priority is not only to help you understand and enjoy the material you bring to me, but to teach you tools for finding answers yourself long into the future.
I graduated from Cambridge University with a Double First in English, and will begin a Master`s in Psychology in September. I specialise in English Literature and Language, though also tutor in History, Latin, Spanish, Maths, Non/Verbal Reasoning, and Interview Technique.
I am highly familiar with 11+ Exams and Common Entrance, having taken them myself, as well as GCSE and A Level (in which I scored 10 A*s and 4 A*s respectively). Exam technique is an art in itself, and there are plenty of general approaches we can learn to make them easier and less stressful.
Difficulties in learning are usually emotional as well as intellectual as frustration builds, confidence falls, and both can cloud the mind. I value patience and gentle psychologically-informed suggestions to create a safe and inspiring space in which we can remove those mental blocks together.
Availability: I am generally available at any time of day, adaptive to your schedule and preferences.
Willing to travel: 4 miles
Experience: I draw on years of private tutoring experience, from 7+ through to degree-level, as well as full-time professional experience as a classroom assistant and special educational needs teacher in Spain, where I lived for a year.
ENGLISH
Primary/prep school to undergraduate level.
English is my first expertise. The wide range of topics you might bring to me span from reading comprehensions to creative writing; grammar rules to rhetorical devices; essay technique to making sense of dense poetry.
HISTORY, LATIN
Primary/prep school to A Level.
The fundamentals of critical thinking and essay writing apply to all humanities. I was just as strong (if not stronger) in History and Latin at A Level, and happily teach these subjects too.
MATHS
Primary/prep school to GCSE.
I didnt always find Maths easy, and so am especially attuned to ways of making it more accessible. Ive seen some of my best success teaching this subject.
SPANISH
Primary/prep school to A Level (though Ive helped undergraduates too).
Living in Spain, I became highly fluent. I love teaching Spanish and specialise in speaking skills (from accent work to native phrasing).
INTERVIEWS
School entrance; university/Oxbridge entrance.
At Cambridge, I worked with academics to give instructive performances and bespoke advice at open days, taking pride in building prospective applicants confidence. Attitude and appetite are always as important as aptitude.
